oh yes. they are pro escape artists and will find all sorts of crazy ways to get out of the tank and explore.
hermit crabs are very smart. They can find some tricky way to get out. make sure you have the proper top for you tank unless you want to find a hermit crab on your bed.
Yes... I thought it was really weird when i saw that both of my hermit crabs crawl up their ladder and go upside down in there cage and stay there until the morning every night. I am really glad to know that my hermit crabs aren't the only ones to do that! :)
Yes, they enjoy climbing. I bought a large (fake) piece of coral made for fishtanks, from Walmart. My hermit crab climbs all the way to the top and sits there. If you find real coral to use, you should boil it first to rid it of parasites that could hurt your hermit crab. Two points to remember:
1. Anchor the coral deep in the sand in your crab tank- you don't want it to tip over as they try to climb it.
2. Very important: Make sure the coral is not so tall that it would allow the crab to escape the tank. They can be quite the escape artists. It's always a good idea to have a lid/screen on the top of the tank, anyway.
driftwood, you can buy it at most pet stores, if you have a water pool in the tank then put the driftwood as a bridge from water to land, and the hermit crab(s) can climb in and out and will not drown. and also you can just set it in the cage for them to climb, and never try to pull it off the wood if it clings they like to grip it, if you yank them off it can injure the hermit crab, especially it's legs.
