They can survive long car rides. Just make sure that the hermit crabs have enough water so that they are not uncomfortable The movement can be stressful so make sure the hermit crabs to not get jostled around. Put the travel tank on the floor in the back seat so that it will not slide around. It is also important that the car does not get too hot or too cold. If you are getting out of your vehicle take the hermit crabs with you. Cars can act as an oven if they are in the sun. About 86 degrees Fahrenheit is preferable to hermit crabs.

Do saltwater hermit crabs have an exoskeleton?

Absolutely. Marine hermit crabs (saltwater hermit crabs) also, like the land hermit crab, have a soft abdomen that is not protected by a hard exoskeleton, so they scavenge shells from snails as they grow to wear for protection. The marine hermit crab will also shed it's exoskeleton as it grows. This is a very fast process, taking only a few hours to a day compared to the molting process of the land hermit crab, which can take several days to a few months.

Does a hermit crab sleep?

Hermit crabs sleep during the day, usually in dark coves and crevices. You will find them hiding under tree limbs, in small cracks in trees, in holes in the sand, in coral, and in rocks and driftwood on the beach.

Can you feed your hermit crabs at noon?

You can feed your pet land hermit crabs at any time of day you choose. Leave fresh foods in for up to 24 hours, and change them out. Many owners prefer to leave food in at all times so that the crabs can eat whenever they are hungry. Often the crabs will be most active at night, so it might be a good idea to make sure there is food in the tank overnight. Steer away from using any commercial foods that contain the preservatives Ethoxyquin or Copper sulfate, as both have been found to be toxic to hermit crabs over long periods, and Ethoxyquin has been linked to molting abnormalities.

How long do hermit crabs need light?

Hermit crabs do need a night and day cycle to their lives to remain healthy. If one cannot provide a natural light during the day, one should invest in a light fixture. As for the night cycle one is not needed, but if one needs the extra warmth in the crabitat, one would use a moon glow bulb with a rare phosphorus coating to simulate the moon.

Can you give hermit crabs fruits from a market that isn't dried?

Actually you should be giving your hermit crab plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, preferably organic, as they can be sensitive to pesticides. Dried food is good, but they need the oils and juices and the nutrients in them to be truly healthy. Commercial hermit crab food is dangerous for hermit crabs, as most of it contains toxic preservatives. Ethoxyquin and Copper sulfate are both slow toxins for your hermit crabs. it is best to switch to an all natural, very varied diet. Feed them well cooked meat that has been taken from what you might be cooking for dinner that night before it is seasoned. They should have good calcium sources, such as shrimp with the exoskeleton still on, mealworms, and seaweed such as spirulina and algae that you can purchase in the fish food section of the pet store. Again, read carefully and do not purchase anything with preservatives in it. Give your crabs a varied diet, change it often (they do not like to eat something they've eaten within 14 hours to 14 days) and you will have healthy, happy crabs. Please see the related link below.

What is best for a hermit crab to eat?

Hermit crabs require an extremely varied diet to be healthy. First, steer away from commercial foods or make sure they don't contain copper sulfate or Ethoxyquin, both of which are toxic for hermit crabs. Hermit crabs need protein, chitin, keratin, calcium, and tannin, as well as Astaxanthin. First on your list should be seaweeds. They also need protein sources, and shrimp is an excellent one. You can feed them bits of any kind of meat you are having for dinner. Just cut off a small piece before seasoning and cook it (never give raw shellfish, it can carry disease that can kill your crabs, cooking can destroy these microbes). Give them a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. Contrary to popular belief, your crab can eat large pieces. Give them nuts, peanut butter (natural only, no added salts or sugars) and flower petals from the garden (only if no pesticides have been used). Also, hermit crabs will not eat anything they have smelled/eaten in the past 14 hours, up to two weeks, so change their food often. All fresh foods should be left no longer than 24 hours to prevent mold growth in the tank.
