No, the simplex does not cause blindness. It may cause swollen glands, cold sores and other minor symptoms.
Actually, upon doing some research, I found that a girl in Ohio lost her sight after a severe case of herpes simplex in the eyes. She did later regain it to some degree, but her eyes were permanently damaged and she was legally blind for almost 3 years.
