Anywhere I have ever worked as an hourly employee and full-time I have been entitled to sick days. My previous job it was 6 sick days per year. Where I am now I had to work 6 months before accumulating sick days and then it was a 1/2 day per month. Most companies as long as you are full-time give sick days. You may want to inquire at the interview or with their human resource person or ask to read a handbook. I don't know what kind of job you are looking into but I am speaking on a corporate scale. My boyfriend worked for a union and they do not work that way. You should inquire about that with the job you are looking into.
Salaried - Exempt would normally get paid for time missed. Salaried, non-exempt most often earns sick time and vacation per company policy.
Normally your sick time is lost when you leave a job, and your vacation time is paid to you on your last check. This could vary if you belong to a union with a specific contract.
