Certain Wii U games have the ability to display the game on the gamepad only. This allows someone to be playing a game on the Wii U while the TV is being played for something else.
Some games will automatically mirror what's displayed on the TV on the gamepad's screen while other games need to be set to display on the gamepad instead. There are also some games that require the use of both the TV and the gamepad.

∙ 10y agoNot really, the Wii U is a home entertainment system that has a console. Only if the Wii U gamepad has a wireless connection with the console, you can travel short distances with it.
