Generally, you must first elevate the trailer via a provided crank or powered floor jack attached to the trailer. Once the hitch is slightly elevated, there is a locking arm located on the hitch, typically with a trigger release. By tripping the trigger release the locking arm can be rotated into the unlocked position and the car will usually drop free of the trailer.
Hitch the trailer. Connect the lights. Start your car or truck. Turn the turn signal on. Get out and go behind the trailer. See if they blink. Repeat for the other side.
A trailer with a weight distribution hitch typically exerts more downward pressure where it attaches to the car compared to a standard hitch. This system redistributes the trailer's weight more evenly across the vehicle's axles, enhancing stability and control. In contrast, a standard hitch may concentrate weight at the rear of the towing vehicle, potentially leading to swaying or reduced traction. Therefore, weight distribution hitches are preferred for heavier loads.
Your owners manual will list the towing capacity of your car.
This will depend on the car and the hitch kit. The Hitch I put on my Fiero to pull the rase tire trailer to events was a bolt on in two hours affair. The one for my KIA is going to be a pain, the rear bumper cover is removed, the bolts to hold the metal bumper to the car are removed, the tail pipe removed. The hitch is bolted up and holes drilled for extra bolts, all the bolts are loosened off and the hitch allowed to hang, the bumper cover re-installed, the hitch bolts tightened and the new tail pipe hanger installed. Book says 3.5 hours, at home in the garage all day.
