It depends.
Matter i anything with mass (kind of like weight) and volume (meaning taking up space).
There are 3 kinds of matter MOST people know about: liquids, solids, and gases.
Also, there is a kind of matter called plasma. I don't know much about it but i do know that one kind of plasma is lightning.
Examples of matter: (liquids, solids, and gases)
SOLIDS: your pencil, paper, computer, clothes, stapler, T.V., paperclip, etc. (solids have a definite SHAPE and a definite VOLUME).
LIQUIDS: water, juice, soda, saliva, etc. (liquids have a define VOLUME but not a definite shape. They take the shape of the container it is in).
GASES: air, carbon dioxide, oxygen, etc. (gases do NOT have a definite shape or a definite volume).
Matter is always there, has always been there, and will always be there. Matter does not simply disappear on its own however matter can be destroyed and has been destroyed by being converted to energy, such as the way a reactor works (both in nature and man made), the sun's core converts matter into energy thus destroying the matter, the same way a hydrogen bomb works. As of now we can not create matter scientifically, however matter can be theoretically created throughout the universe near the event horizon of a black hole.
Matter normally changes form if it does not disappear. A good example is when water freezes and becomes solid ice.
The theory of matter states that it can be destroyed.
