They can if the child is very small. I wouldn't want to put more weight than 30 or 40 lbs.

Are horses ever born dwarfs?

Well a dwarf horse is like a shetland pony or a regular pony not very big but u can still ride the pony not shetland pony Shetland ponies and ponies in general are not Dwarfs! Dwarfs display certain characteristics that are not present in ponies. A miniature horse (A type of pony really) can give birth to dwarfs due to the high level of inbreeding and genetics.

What is the best breed of horse for children?

A Clydesdale. Clydesdale's are actually good kid horses. They are very docile and friendly. but yes, don't get a shetland. even adults struggle with them. Caspian ponies are good for children, as are banker ponies. But I wouldn't advise getting a pony. They tend to be temperamental and your children will grow out of them. I would suggest a Cob. They are a good natured type of horse. They are very docile and willing. They are very reliable and sure footed. They are so reliable they sometimes give rides to deformed people or elderly people! DO NOT GET AN ARABIAN! Arabians are great horses for adults, but they may be too spirited for children.I think maybe a welsh mountain pony is the best choice. They are good riding ponies and have a kind nature and are usually really good around children, pets and other horses.DONT GET A SHETLAND PONY! They may look really cute but they are really aggressive. Always check with the person you are buying from about the horses background and attitude and make sure that you can take it back if it is not the right horse for you.A miniature pony is a good start.Answer 2:Miniature ponies although often ridden are not designed for riding, only for pet and harness use and therefore are not good for children to learn to ride on. Shetland ponies (not the same thing as miniature horses/ ponies) and smaller equines are great first horses for smaller kids. However the pony should be big enough for an adult to ride to provide 'tune up rides' when needed.

How heavy do you have to be to ride a Shetland pony?

There is no such thing as a 'miniature Shetland' pony. You have either a Miniature horse or a Shetland pony. Mini's should never be ridden by anyone ever, they have fragile spines that can be hurt by direct weight. They can however pull a small pony cart with one or two adults in it. Shetlands are a breed of small pony that are very strong and make a great first pony for a kid. They can also pull a cart if trained correctly.

How short do horses get?

The smallest bread of horse is the falabella. The smallest 'type' of hrose would be miniature ponies, which can be as small as 32 inches, at the *wither.Matilda is the smallest horse in The world.* Wither- Start of the neckTo ride or not to ride? That's a stupid question!

Are shetland ponies easy to ride?

Shetland ponies are versatile, easy to train, intelligent and docile making them excellent first ponies for children. They are not always necessarily faster but are quicker than larger horses in their pace. It sort of feels like your riding a sewing machine in the trot, but hey, it's not that far to fall if you have a spill!! They are popular at Pony Club and a great asset to the show ring. Most Shetlands enjoy work and would happily go all day. Some are stubborn, like a lot of ponies, but it is a bit of a lucky dip which personality they will have on the day. Hope this helps, Horse Head

Shetland ponies tend to be quite mischievous and sometimes a little bit aggressive. They can be friendly , but careful when you get on ones back ! Last time i rode one i got slammed against the fence , and nearly landed in barbed wire.
