"Model rocket fuel" is basically in the form of single-shot engines. You could, I suppose, strap one to a stick and call it a "bottle rocket", but I don't think it would fly very well (and the engine would likely burn off the stick).

Bottle Rockets that you can buy in many stores are fueled with Solid Fuel. Most liquid fuel rockets contain 2 different types of fuel. Once that fuel is mixed and ignited you get your thrust.

The "fire" coming of rockets are the result of combusting fuels exhausting with tremendous force. This force is known as thrust. Model rockets are similar by using solid chemicals that when lit push their energy downwards to move the rocket into the sky against gravity.
