i think this is how it goes...in 2009, you can take the SAT test as many times as you want and in the end choose your best score and enter it the university. For 2008, i believe they accept the better score.

For most colleges and universities 1400 SAT score is considered a good score for admissions.
Though not essential, an excellent GATE score helps in admission to NUS, NTU (both in Singapore) and a few German universities like TUM & RWTH. If you come across other such universities, please share it here.

The general conception is universities consider the latest score. So if you are really unlucky and get a lower score in 2nd attempt, in that case the higher score would be taken int consideration. Also, don't forget to check individual school websites.
