nail polish is toxic if swallowed, and harmful if inhaled.

It is harmless if used properly.

Another answer:

Choose a variety of nail polish that contains the LEAST amount of harmful toxins as possible, and always apply it in a well ventilated area.

Try to avoid using nail polish containing the following potentially hazardous materials:

Dibutyl Phthalate, or DBP. Lab tests link this chemical to cancer in lab animals, and to underdeveloped genitals and other fertility problems in newborn boys. Tests have shown Phthalates to affect hormone function, and studies link them to early puberty in girls and low sperm counts in men. Repeated exposure may cause nausea, vomiting, tearing of the eyes, dizziness, and headaches. Long term exposure may cause damage to the kidneys and liver. The US FDA doesn't require that cosmetics be tested for long-term effects before coming to market; nor is it requiring companies stop using DBP.

Toluene - a human reproductive and developmental toxin. It has been linked to birth defects in lab animals. It may affect a person's nervous system. Symptoms may include: Tiredness, confusion, memory loss, weakness. It it thought to also cause liver damage, and skin irritation. Higher levels may affect the kidneys as well.

Formaldehyde - has caused cancer in the nose and throat of lab animals. It is a carcinogen (could cause cancer) and an indoor pollutant. Inhalation can cause headache, watery eyes, burning in the throat, and labored breathing.

ok, I will try and answer what I think you mean. Nail polish is made up of many ingredients, in times gone by, they were laden with chemicals and still to this day, there are some companies still using a lot of harmful chemicals. Many now like revlon, etc are now making their nail polish without 3 of the most harmful chemicals. The great thing now is, you can buy organic, natural nail polish which is very good for your fingernails health.
