The major difference between using a heat gun as opposed to a lighter, is that with a heat gun, the job will be a bit more clean, more professional, and less chances of burning your hand, or burning the shrink tube. If your job is small, and investing in a heat gun is not worth your while, then I do recommend using a lighter, it will achieve the same result.
