Opal is a stone that is a clearish whitish background, with different colors scattered around on it. There are colors such as red, orange, blue, green, ect. These colors appear more than once on the stone.
They are a soft stone and crack very easy. There are different colors and are only found in Australia.
A faux [or false ] opal should look as much like a real opal as possible and they come in a variety of colors.
The types of Opal that i am familiar with are White Opal, Fire Opal, Boulder Opal, Black Opal, Crystal Opal, Light Opal, Doublet Opal, Triplet Opal, Common Opal, Synthetic Opal, and Immitation Opal.
Opals have a special characteristic which makes the gem a rainbow-like iridescence that changes colors when turned at different angles.
They have to dig for it There are several different mining sites in Australia where different types of opal is found.
There different ones because an opal birthstone is for October a topaz is for November
October's birth stone is the opal. It is a gemstone consisting o silica, typically semitransparent showing various colors.
Contraluz is opal where you see the play of colors by illuminating the back of the stone with light as compared to most opal where the light falls on the front of the stone to see the play of fire, The contaluz opal when illuminated from behind, the stones develop a brilliant colour play.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... however, if you wish my personal opinion, Opal's are much prettier than rose zircon. Of course it also depends on the play of colors (the "fire") that the opal has.

There are two birthstones for October. They are Rose Quartz and Opal. You can find Rose Quartz in most retail stores, but many of them don't have opals.
