You can, but it isn't recomended, because the surgery area is still sore, and putting stuff on there like that, could make it worse or infected because you aren't suppose to touch them for a little while. You should just take the medicine that your dentist prescribed to you. And for me, he gave me Loratab stuff, and I would take it in the morning, and if it still hurt then you are allowed to take Advil or Ibruprophen so they overlap each other so you feel better all day long. But i wouldn't recommend touching your sores with that stuff until you go and see your doctor and they say that it is okay, or until your stitches come out, if you had stitches.

Why causes the socket after tooth extraction to turn black?

Naturally, it depends upon "which" extraction --- however, in the normal course of things, it should appear somewhat "depressed", and should be the same color of the rest of your gums. If bleeding continues, try biting down on a warm tea bag instead of "gauze". Why? Because tea contains "tanic acid", which helps heal and shrink the gum.

How do you take a tooth out?

First, the tooth should be COMPLETLY numb so that the patient does not feel any pain. Once that is accomplished, then the Dentist will use an instrument called an elevator to push the gums gently away from the tooth. When most of the gums at the top are pulled back the dentist will use another instrument that pushes the gums aways as you he goes lower down the roots of the tooth. When all sides of the tooth are loose from the ligament then the tooth should already be mobile and the Dentist can use surgical forceps to pull the loose tooth out. The worst and longest part is the numbing aspect...loosening the tooth should be a breeze in most cases.
