This is because of the amount of processing power needed to display 3D images. The TVs are well, more heavy duty in a sense. Think of it this way, you get a way better TV for 2D with a 3D TV and the 3D feature is just an added bonus. You won't even have to shell out hundreds of bucks for the glasses because the passive types are less expensive than the active types. And out of the passive types? I would have to recommend either LG or Vizio (LG if you're willing to pay a tad bit more for the better TV in my opinion).
