They can treat a mental illness without medication. Treating and curing are two different concepts. And most psychiatrists don't/shouldn't give medications unless they feel that they are necessary for a person to function normally. If a person can function without them, they should be allowed by their psychiatrist, unless they have disorders that require that kind of treatment.
