Does diesel engines run on diesel fuel or gasoline fuel?

Diesel engines run on diesel fuel. Gasoline will destroy a diesel engine.

Can Biofuel be used to run ships?

Yes, biofuel, like biodiesel, will run in diesel engines. Many ships have diesel engines run on fossil fuel diesel and they will easily run on biofuel.

Why petrol cannot be used in diesel engines and vice versa?

Diesel fuel is used in diesel engines as a partial lubricant. It also has a high flash point due the fact that diesel engines ignite the fuel by compression rather than spark. A gasoline engine on the other hand fires the fuel by spark and the fuel has a lower flash point. Gasoline has no lubricating qualities whatsoever. Diesel engines are designed to run on diesel fuel and the use of gasoline in a diesel engine will destroy it. Gasoline engines on the other hand will not even run on diesel but no damage will be done to the engine. You will however have to drain the fuel tank and flush out the fuel lines.

Do locomotive trains use gas?

Locomotives use diesel engines thus run on diesel fuel, they do not use gasoline.

What is the difference in how a normal car engine and a diesel car engine in how they work?

diesel engines compress the fuel mixture much more than gasoline engines, diesel engines are always fuel injected while gasoline engines have the option of being carbureted, diesel engines usually cost more, diesels produce more power than a comparable gasoline engine, diesel engines have no distributor or spark system, and instead use glow plugs to ignite fuel, and diesel engines can be converted to run on vegetable oil with few modifications.

Are diesel pickup trucks more fuel efficient?

Yes a diesel pickup truck will be more fuel efficient than those that run on normal fuel. Diesel is designed to run longer than the regular fuel however it comes at a higher cost.

What are sailboats with engines running on?

They run on the water. They most likely use diesel fuel to power the engine.

Why is petrol not used in diesel engines or diesel in petrol engines?

Because the engines will not run with the wrong fuel to to their design. Although both diesel and petrol engines are internal combustion engines, they have differences that enable them to use these different fuels. A petrol engine ignites the fuel/air mixture by using a spark plug. A diesel engine in contrast has no spark but compresses air during the compression cycle. When air is compressed it heats up. Diesel is then injected into the cylinder and it ignites.

What do bullet trains run on Diesel?

They don't ... they're electric locomotives.

Does the Ford F350 run better with regular fuel or diesel fuel?

The Ford F350's take diesel fuel in most instances unless they have been modified to take regular fuel. Be sure to check your owners manual to see which kind of fuel your truck takes.

Why do many cars have diesel engines when petrol gives a better performance?

Some cars have diesel engines because diesel engines give more mileage and diesel is cheaper than gasoline in some countries. In the UK diesel fuel costs more than gas but, because diesel engines give much better mileage (miles per gallon), people are still happy to pay more for the diesel fuel if they run diesel vehicles. Diesel engines last much longer and have much better torque at low revs than a petrol engine.

Can you use 500ppm diesel in a common rail engine?

Pre 2007 diesel engines can run on 500 ppm diesel fuel. 2007 and later diesel engines that call for ultra low sulfur diesel fuel should not. These systems use EGR and the extra sulfur in the diesel creates sulfuric acid by nature and will then be reintroduced into the combustion process. Even later diesel engines are using diesel particulate filters that are sensitive to the extra sulfur. Bottom line, if your engine says that it is rated for ultra low sulfur diesel fuel (15ppm) use it.
