Yes. I had a Singer Sewing machine for years and used it to make all sorts of clothes using stretch fabric. I now have a Viking and have no problems with it either. You do need to change to a needle that is specifically made for stretch/knit fabrics. You would need a ball needle so it will go into the fabric easier.
A stretch stitch is used on knits and other fabrics that easily distort out of shape. The stretch stitch is available on many models of sewing machines.
Sewing machines can do many types of sewing. Some of them are practical, like stitches for attaching fabrics together. Others are decorative, for example, some sewing machines can spell out words on fabrics.
yes some of the stores do have repair
No, sewing machines do not all use the same needles for their operations. Different types of sewing machines require different types and sizes of needles to properly sew different fabrics and achieve different results.

Often, when it comes to different fabrics, the settings of a machine are more important than which machine. For thin fabrics, you want higher tension on your stitches. You can also make sure your presser foot holds the fabric securely, and use a stabilizer for any embroidery or buttonholes.
JoAnn Fabrics does not carry small tables for sewing machines, but Michael's does. You may also want to try IKEA. While the IKEA tables may not be made specifically for sewing machines, you will probably find a more extensive selection of small tables than you would at Michael's.

A serger (overlock) sewing machine uses up to four threads and has a special trimming blade. It is designed for one main job: it sews, trims and overcasts the seam at the same time. Its function is specialized, but it can really speed up sewing and gives the finished item a professional look. A serger is a great machine for sewing stretch fabrics. A home sewing machine is designed to do a wider variety of tasks. It will generally have more stitches, plus presser feet and attachments to sew zippers, buttonholes, do machine quilting, etc. There is usually an overlock stitch on a home sewing machine, but you can't sew the seam, overlock and trim all in one pass. Lots of sewers have one (or more!) of each.
Juki and Brother make sewing machines that are good.
Sewing machines are very heavy. As such, there is no such thing as a portable sewing machine.
The Phaff sewing machines are made in Germany, Europe.
