Actually you could, just do not do it too often, as you might damage your teeth and gums. Also, the salt does not taste very nice in your mouth. A good toothpaste (there are plenty in the market to choose from) is recommended for everyday use.

You can brush your teeth with peanut butter if you want. There's no reason to use salt. Some people who don't like using toothpaste use baking soda. That may be what you are thinking of. Baking soda will do a pretty good job of cleaning your teeth, but you don't get any fluoride with it.

Toothpaste may contain salts as sodium chloride, sodium fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium pyrophosphate etc.
