What is the best way to use my laptop and iphone when traveling?
Your options are buying wifi hotspot vouchers, buying a local sim card, or roaming. However, I recently heard about a MiFi device that allows you to make your own personal portable wifi hotspot, which is really convenient when you're travelling. You can connect up to 5 devices to it, use skype, etc. Pretty cool I used MiFiClub when I travelled to the UK.

Th pre has wifi. It's free to use if you find a free wifi hotspot. It can act as a hotspot, but it won't be free on future models.
Can you use your phone as a hotspot?
You will be able to use your smartphone as a PC at a Wifi hotspot. You will only be able to use the applications that your smartphone has installed though.

No. There's an iPad WiFi and an iPad WiFi + Cellular. The iPad WiFi will only be able to access the internet when you're within range of a WiFi network. The iPad WiFi + Cellular is able to access the internet within range of WiFi and on a 3G network. To access the 3G network you will however have to use an active simcard.
