Researchers believe that narcolepsy is a neurologic disease that impairs the brain's regulatory sleep/wake mechanism. It is also believed that narcolepsy is hereditary. A study of about 300 cases found that 54 of the cases were clustered into 19 families.

Yes it is. It is called "Fatal Familial Insomnia". It is a very rare genetic disorder. So far, only about 100 families carry the gene.

Most certainly. My mom inherited from her father. Thankfully I was spared of the hazards. Sleepwalking basically is an indication that certain parts of the brain may not be relaxing properly at bed time. The trigger factors can be anything from illness or fever or fatigue or stress or anxiety. For most habitual sleepwalkers, there is a strong family history of the disorder.

One of my cousins keeps talking about his site that she found about called mediangels. Apparently they have a renowned list of expert health professionals who can be reached instantly unlike the tedious getting an appointment routine. Go and check it out as they have cases of sleep disorder listed on their site as well.

Researchers believe that the inheritance of narcolepsy occurs when several genes play a role in being susceptible to the disorder.
