Can someone PLEASE explain the ending to the movie Cruising with Al Pachino?

In the ending of "Cruising," Al Pacino's character, Steve Burns, becomes increasingly entangled in the dark world of the gay S&M scene while investigating a series of murders. The film concludes ambiguously, with Steve seemingly losing his identity as he adopts traits from both the victims and the killer. The final scenes suggest a psychological transformation, leaving viewers questioning whether he has become part of the very culture he was investigating. The ambiguity and tension reflect broader themes of identity and societal norms.
