Yes. Sound is measured by decibels. It is safe to only hear 65 decibels or less. If sound is higher than 65 decibels, it can 95.6% damage your eardrums. Listening to music through your headphones at highest volume from an mp3 or an iPhone is considered 82 decibels. Listening to a concert is considered 167 decibels. A blue whale is 300+. :)

The loud sound creates huge soundwaves, which can kill the tiny hairs inside the cochlea as the vibrations pass through. As the hairs can never repair, permanant damage (or even total deafness) is caused.

How is hearing affected if a person 's cochlea is damaged?

The cochlea is the part of the inner ear that takes vibrations, transferred from sound waves hitting the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and converts them into signals for the auditory nerve. Different parts of the cochlea "encode" different frequencies (pitches) of sound. Therefore, if only part of the cochlea is damaged, a person may lose the ability to hear certain frequencies of sound. If it is damaged enough, the person may lose the ability to hear completely in one ear.
