No it only checks the spelling of the words you have typed.
Three things spell check/grammar check in MS Word will not find are: 1. Words spelled correctly but with error in usage; 2. Many uncommon words-- for example, medical terminologies 3. Many Proper Names
Don't and dont. It works on my spell checker, and the one here on WikiAnswers. The word is also slang and the computer gets used to reading it. ("learned ignore")

Start with spell check.
Some words may not be in the dictionary that came with the program, for example scientific or technical terms. A spell-check program will also not "catch" a word that is spelled correctly but isn't the one you mean. An example of this would be there/their/there. Spell check is a good first step, but don't depend on it!
