The harm seems to be psychological, scaring people or making them run away, perhaps into harm.
Poltergeists throw things, but most seem to miss, or throw harmless things.

Ghosts may or may not exsist. If you believe they do there are bad and good spirits and as long as you do not let the bad spirits come to mind they cannot harm you.
Can you believe in ghost and spirits and not believe in God?
As a person who neither believes in ghosts and spirits nor God, I can still see it as a rational possibility to believe in ghosts and spirits but not God - just as it is rationally possible to believe in God but not ghosts and perhaps not even spirits. It is also possible to believe in ghosts and spirits as well as other gods, but not the abrahamic God. It is up to you what you believe, as long as you can rationalise your own beliefs and do no harm to others. Yes, you can believe in Ghosts (or spirits) and not of god. I have had experienced with Ghost [Energy] but not of a god.
Why do ghost contact you?
ghosts contact humans because they want to see what a living soul does. some angry spirits come to humans to abuse them just because they are dead and you are not. restless spirits come to humans for partial help or direction to why it died, how to get to heaven, etc. most spirits are different from themselves, yet most claim to be angry and restless spirits both at the same time. this means that they either call to you so that they can physically harm you, or they physically harm you to get attention so that you can help them. either way, these are all why ghosts contact humans.
Can spirits harm children?
Alcohol is dangerous for all people, even children. Spirits (Ghosts) are figments of imagination, ghost stories can scare children, especially children who already have psychological issues, so yes spirits in this sense could theoretically harm children.

Even the spirits of Satan and his angels have to inhabit a living person before they can present themselves to you. There are many instances in scripture where this has been so.
