Well, I personally think that since squirrels are wild animals, they shouldn't be put in cages at all! But, since you're asking, I think it would be best to maybe put it in a rabbit cage, just so it has more room. And try to put as many "wild" things in there. (grass, leaves, etc.)

To answer YOUR question, I think you could put a squirrel in a hamster cage, but a really big hamster cage.

They can, but it would be pretty hard. Squirrels are meant to be wild animals, and are thus not used to being tame.
