"Yes" Sugar can be used to kill weeds. But it does not really kill the weeds it makes the soil too rich for them to grow in. I started to do this 3 years ago as an experiment. I spread the white sugar in a Scott's hand held spreader set at #1 and did my lawn 13 times that year. The grass grew so well and all the weeds disappeared except for creeping charlie. The next year I did my lawn 6 times with the sugar since it grew so well the year before. But I had a few dandelions growing so I believe it should be about 9 times a year you should do your lawn with the sugar. I have also done spot weeding with the sugar in just putting sugar on the weed itself to kill dandelions and they grow fast and disappear because I made the soil rich and weeds do not grow in rick soil.
Now for you people who talk about ants being attracted to it (The sugar) You are right ants like to eat sugar but they do not like to live in it. When I first did my lawn I put 2 hand fulls of sugar on a large ant hill. We have ant hills that are 3 inches high and about 1-2 feet across. 2-3 weeks later there was very little activity in the ant hill so I put 2 more hand fulls on it . 2-3 weeks after that the ant hill was dead and they where moving to a new one 15 feet away. So I believe I poisoned their home and or attracted micro organisms to it. If the eggs where covered in sugar they might have been killed by things in the soil. Ants must have enemies TOO!
