Perhaps the full question is how can one separate by filtration, a sugar and sand mixture.

One answer is to thoroughly saturate the mixture, and run the liquid through a filter paper. The sugar solution will run through, but the sand will not pass.

You may then recover the sugar by gentle evaporation of the liquid.
