Yes it can. Make sure first, that both surfaces are clean and de-greased by washing with a little lacquer thinner or similar.
You can replace a rearview mirror, on your 1996 Infiniti, by removing the old mirror with a scraper. Apply the glue to the cleaned surface. Hold the new mirror in place until the glue dries.

get a good hold and turn the handle where the mirror sits on. should be a quarter or half a turn. Please note: 'don't turn mirror' as it is build to swivel.

IF its glued 2 the window u need 2 get a kit that has primer & glue JUST 4 rear veiw mirrows.The metal base needs 2 b cleaned very good & the window.Then apply the glue & hold 4 1 minute-U might want 2 mark where the mirror goes on the outside with a caryon so as where 2 put it.

I would use a good pressure sensitive glue like 100 % clear silicone, in a caulk tube (for ease of application) There are 4-5 good types of this adhesive in Home Depot at about $5 per tube. - I prefer 'Mono' , as it's always worked well for me.
no. it will not hold, especially in the heat. the correct kind of glue can be purchased in ant auto parts store. it is inexpensive and does the job.
