The only 100% way to prevent HIV infection is to abstain from any form of sexual contact or avoid any direct to blood stream events like needle sticks or transfusions with infected blood.

With that being said safe sexual practices as in wearing condoms for intercourse will greatly reduce the chances of it spreading (although they can and do break from time to time)

Other forms of medical contraception like the pill or an IUD will not stop the spread of HIV infections.

The HIV Virus can be treated most of the time, and most people who are HIV positive can live a very long time. There is no cure for HIV now, or in the near future. There is hope that a cure might someday be found. For now, the HIV Virus can be treated for Most people, but, it will be a problem they will have to live with for the rest of their natural lives.

Yes. Note that HIV is transmitted mainly through sexual intercourse. Therefore, you can do one of the following, or several:

  • Don't have sexual intercourse.
  • If you do, don't change sex partners frequently, and don't have several sex partners at the same time. Staying with one partner for a long time will greatly reduce your risk. Most religions preach that you should ONLY have sexual intercourse with your husband or wife; if both you and your spouse follow this, you are fairly safe. If not, at least don't change sex partners frequently.
  • Otherwise, using barrier methods, such as condoms, should reduce your risk.
