No. The guardian of a minor child cannot "relieve" the parent of their child support obligation. That power is reserved for the courts. If the guardian doesn't need it to help support the child then it should be deposited into a trust with the child as the sole beneficiary at college time.

Does support stop when the mother dies?

Of course not. Child support is for the support of a minor child. Why should the child be deprived of financial support if her mother dies. How do you stop child support to a parent who has died?

You have to present a Death Certificate to the court that issued the child support order and request that the order be terminated. If you obtain custody it will be terminated permanently. If there is another guardian appointed for the child a new child support order will be issued.
