I would expect that backing board would be highly desirable for a variety of reasons:
* It provides a ridged support across the entire surface. Without it a slip could cause damage to the surround. * Sound insulation of the backing board will help make the noise in the other parts of the house. * Proper backing board for that area by code would require that it be water proof, which will keep the value of the home in better shape.
It's not necessary at all, unless you want to tell somebody exactly where you are, or go directly to a spot that somebody sends you to. There's no way to describe the location of a point on a surface with just one piece of information. But with two, it can be totally nailed. (That's why the address of a house has both a number and the name of a street.)
