In the sense that the turtle attains a height above that he has previously attained, the answer is yes, a turtle can climb. However, a turtle cannot, nor does he have an inclination to "climb a vertical tree". His hard, wide bottom precludes him doing that.

Actually, I don't know about most other turtles, but I find that my own Box turtle loves to climb. She likes climbing up her artificial tree, or out of her water tub that I soak her in daily. They definitely have the ability, I'm sure it's just a matter of willingness and adventure. Answer Turtles can "climb" in a limited sense. They climb onto rocks, logs, or other "structure" to get out of the water when they want to. And often to warm themselves in the sun or air. But you won't see a turtle climbing up the side of a standing tree. They are not built to do what something like, say, a squirrel can do.

If they can wedge themselves between objects and have traction, they can climb up between rocks, tree trunks and branches, and into shrubs and bushes. But once the don't have any more traction, they will either be stuck or will slide back out. And they don*t seem to understand the concept of using a reverse gear, they appear to only understand going forward or turning.
