Overview:
Depression is a very complex condition and many approaches to treatment may need to be tried before any success is found. There maybe psychological, biological or developmental causes of depression, and each of these causes would need to be addressed in a different way. Depression does not always respond to initial treatment attempts of talking therapy or medication, but perserverance and trying different treatments can bring results.
Anti-depressants:
Depression can have a biological underpinning which psychological (talking) therapies might not be able to address as successfully as anti-depressants.
If depression has not responded to various courses of anti-depressants, there is research which suggests that the augmentation (combination) of 2 different antidepressants (as a single treatment) can be successful in some cases where a single anti-depressant has failed.
This must be tried only with the supervision of a medical doctor because the combination of 2 different medications can be dangerous.
Talking Therapy:
Psychological issues related to depression may run very deep and sometimes stem from childhood. Some types of talking therapy can help to bring issues to the surface so that they can be fully understood. Once they are understood, a skilled therapist can help to resolve whatever is causing the harm. This process can take a very long time.
Sometimes all the issues can't be resolved, but a person can be helped to cope better with the their negative feelings and moods, so that they can get on with their life, even if all of the negative feelings can't be got rid of.
There are different types of talking therapy and many people have been helped by one kind of therapy of another. Different therapies may suit different temperaments. A good relationship with the therapist is essential for a successful outcome (ie you have to like or respect your therapist).

Secondary depression, or depression caused by unfavorable life events, is normally self limiting, and may best be treated with cognitive/behavioral therapy rather than drugs.
Flappers are most commonly associated with the Roarin' Twenties, before the Great Depression. They wore short skirts, drank, smoked, and treated sex in a casual manner.
Depression is capitalized in phrases such as The Great Depression, but the medical condition and the scientific are not.

Nerve problems would probably be best treated by a neurologist and depression can be treated by a psychiatrist, a family physician, or an internal medicine physician, but a psychiatrist might be the way to go for depression.
Any medication that is intended to treat depression is called an anti-depressant, and there are lots of anti-depressants. If you need one, your doctor or psychiatrist can prescribe one for you.

I asked him, but he was unresponsive.
Can't be done, yet. But it can be treated with medication.
No, sorry there isn't. Clinical depression is a serious illness (and is sometimes fatal). Even the best treatments for it often fail and the ultimate fallback treatment for unresponsive cases (ECT) has serious side effects itself.

Serious depression (two or more weeks) is usually treated with antidepressant medication. This is often followed up after mood begins to improve with talk therapy to develop and improve coping skills to reduce relapse. Minor depression is usually treated with talk therapy.
If left untreated, depression can last your entire life. If you are treated properly, may just last a couple of years. Depression is not something that you can just get over quickly.
