The answer to this question has much to do with genetics and how young the piglet is. There are three categories of "wild boars". 1) Eurasian wild boars 2) Feral pigs with ancestors that were once domesticated 3) Hybrids of the two. I recently captured and tamed a freshly weaned piglet that showed up on my land. From the best I can tell she is a hybrid. She has a very long snout, gray coat, small flop ears and a curly tail. I started by feeding her pig chow and fruit every day. She quickly learned her name and would come when I called. I would speak to her in a soothing tone and assure her she had nothing to fear. She began to follow me around the property and eventually I lead her into a pig pen where she would be safe from predators and hunters. It took about a month for her to become comfortable enough for me to pet her. I recently taught her how to sit and she now enjoys belly rubs and scratches behind the ear.

Please note that wild boars can be very destructive and adults can be dangerous. If you approach a pig and they start growling back away. It is best to give them their space. Rooting and wallow digging are natural behaviors but do damage to property if the pig is not confined to a pig pen. Make the pig pen as large as possible. The pig is accustomed to wide open spaces and needs a lot of room so it will not become stressed. My pig is approximately 45 pounds and has an enclosure that is 200 feet along the perimeter.

If you intend on keeping the pig as a pet you will also need to read up on food requirements and healthcare needs. You will definitely need to de-worm the pig and check her/him for ticks. A visit to the large mammal vet may be necessary. Once captured the pig is your responsibility. Pigs can not sweat and will need misters, a homemade wallow and/or large fans so they can cool down. They will also need a place for shade and a 3 sided shelter from inclement weather.

All domestic pigs have a wild side. If let loose a domestic pig will "morph" into a wild boar/sow as they remain outside in the elements.
