Can a jackrabbit be a pet?

No, jackrabbits are wild animals and they can't be kept as pets. In some rare circumstances, if the jackrabbit is abandoned by the mother as a baby and someone finds it, then a professional wildlife rehabber may be able to hand-raise the rabbit -- in that case, it will be kept as a pet, probably for life. However, people who have no experience hand-raising rabbits shouldn't try it because the chances of survival are very low. Also, people often think they've found an abandoned baby rabbit, when in fact the rabbit is not abandoned at all, and the mother is on her way back. Wild rabbits typically do not do well when caged or in any way kept as a pet, just like any other wild animal. Domestic rabbits are just that - domesticated, over hundreds and hundreds of years. Sometimes a jackrabbit is found ill or injured, or a baby is abandoned; in that case, an experienced wildlife rehabber can take care of the animal and, if possible, release it back into the wild when it's better. This is a big undertaking, though, and should not be attempted by inexperienced people. Generally speaking, wild animals should be left alone.

Yes, they are both "Lagomorphs". Some people think rabbits are rodents but they are actually Lagomorphs. They can mate. :)
