x32 version uses about 3.8 Gb even if you have more than that. It's maximum what it supports. x64 can handle much more than 4 Gb, it's about hundreds of Gbs.

the main thing is how much the motherboard can support

Which laptop is the fastest to boot-up?

Two big factors to know which one will are: - The OS (Operating system, for example Windows XP) - The RAM (Random Accses Memory, Max any PC can acctaully Use is 4GB RAM, With that your PC should boot very nice and quick) If you have a Windows XP with 4GB RAM I garuntee you it will boot very quickly, It would be a bit slower with Vista and possibly even more slower with Windows 7 However I've only tried the Beta of Windows 7 and that booted fine on the Virtual 500MB of RAM I gave it. Anouther words this is my advice in lamens terms: Buy a PC that has 3/4GB RAM and make sure it has Windows XP. Then you will have a nice & quick boot up. Hope this helped.

What ram can be put on a Windows xp?

Whatever memory your motherboard can support but a 64bit version of Windows is needed to manage more than 4GB of RAM. Generally people use 32bit version ram for all the Windows Operating Systems. So for that it is enough to have 1GB ram. I think 1 GB ram is more than enough for it. In case If you prefer to choose a 32 Bit version of Windows 7 Then you have to upgrade your hardware to 1GB or more than that.

Do you need 32bit or 64bit for 4gb of ram?

You can use either a 32bit or 64bit operating system (OS) for 4GB of RAM. 4GB of memory is the limit a 32bit OS can handle, this includes any memory that your graphics card has, so your computer may recognise only 3.5GB of RAM if you have a 512MB GPU. You will need a 64bit os that will use all of the ram.
