rear, as far as i know BMW has never made a front wheel drive car but they do also make all wheel drive cars

It depends on if it ie front or rear wheel drive or 3 wheel drive. If it is 4 wheel drive, it is not good and will cause problems. If it is either front or rear wheel drive keep the wheels the same on the drive wheels ie. front wheel drive, keep the 17 or 16 inch wheels on the front but make sure they are the same.
Probably means you have a "front wheel" drive car....your front tires are what make your car go, not the back. I have front wheel drive on my car and once on a rainy day...my front wheels spun out taking off from a stop sign...wierd! I hate front wheel drive cars!
There are many different bearings. Need to know the year, make, model, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, all wheel drive and if it is the front or rear wheel bearing.
Could it be engineered in such a fashion? Certainly. As for doing it yourself, there are some custom transfer case builders who build transfer cases which can be set to front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, then there'll be a couple different four wheel drive settings, but these are very niche products, and extremely expensive.

VW does not make a front wheel drive version of their 3.2 Liter Golf. The 3.2 liter golf is other known as the R32 which only comes as all wheel drive. All other golfs are just Front wheel drive including the 2.6 liter VR6 and the 1.8 liter turbo.
