NO YOU CAN NOT ADDRESS A MASTER SERGEANT AS "SERGEANT"!

Yes you can do this in the Army but should you address a Master Sergeant in the Marines as a Sergeant or "Sarg" your going to hear some vocal cords at high volume in your face.

There are four addresses for NCOs in the Army. Corporal, Sergeant, First Sergeant, & Sergeant Major. Addressing NCOs by rank, such as the uses of "Master Sergeant" as a form of address is not appropriate when speaking to the individual but may be used to further identify the individual to a third party.

Example: "The soldier standing by the truck is Master Sergeant Smith."

When addressing the individual, the address of Sergeant should be used.

Example: "Sergeant Smith, I would like to introduce you to Mr. Jones."

It is inappropriate to call a SMSgt "Senior". Reference the little brown book dated 2009.

How do you address a master gunnery sergeant?

Verbal conversations are nearly always General, Colonel, or Lieutenant. Written communications almost always should be Major General, Lieutenant Colonel or 1st Lieutenant.AnswerIn the British Armed Forces, you never address an officer by rank alone. James Bond would never be addressed as "Commander", but as "Commander Bond". Subordinates would never address him by rank; they would simply call him "Sir", never "Commander".

What do you call a E8 in the Marines?

A First Sergeant or a Master Sergeant. Which rank they actually are depends on their job. The rank insignias are different. They both have 3 chevrons and 3 rockers, but the First Sergeant has a diamond in the middle and the Master Sergeant has a pair of crossed rifles on the middle. It is improper to address either one of these ranks by shortening the rank names. www.marines.com

Can a master sergeant take over first sergeant if he leaves?

When a First Sergeant leaves, it'll either be because they've been relieved of duty, or are about to be promoted to Sergeant Major. Who replaces the First Sergeant depends on the availability. It may be a Master Sergeant transferred from a staff position, or it may be a Sergeant First Class who is about to be promoted to E-8. You won't find Master Sergeants in line companies - Master Sergeants are found in staff positions.

Where is the split in rank in the Marine Corps?

I assume you are talking about E-8 and E-9 ranks. At E-8 you become either a First Sergeant or a Master Sergeant. If you take the First Sergeant route the next rank becomes Sergeant Major. If you take the Master Sergeant route the next rank becomes Master Gunnery Sergeant.
