This condition can result from several different genetic or specific fetal problems (including congenital diaphragmatic hernia). It is rare but not unknown for a baby to have only one fully-developed lung. Many such infants have survived to lead normal, active lives. However, medical conditions involving the single lung can be more severe than where there are two lungs.
