Can you be demoted in judo?

it depends on your sense (instructor) some are very serious (bigger clubs) and some are focused on just learning (the smaller clubs)

i have been doing judo for 5 years and have been to 6 competitions

Yes. Taekwondo students can, in fact, be demoted a belt rank.

Although uncommon, students who violate any rules of the dojang can be demoted. Color belts represent geup (grades), and are temporary in nature. Progress will allow a student to go up in rank, and dishonorable conduct can result in a demotion of rank. A student who shows rude behavior such as disrespecting their instructors, seniors, other students, parents, school teachers, or those who disobey laws can be demoted in belt rank.

Typically, the Black Belt Dan (Degree) is considered a permanent rank, and can not be demoted back to color belt, but the rank itself, as well as the degree of Black Belt, is something that is recognized and held in "good standing" within an organization. Violations of the rules can result in probation, and the Black Belt student not being allowed to wear their belt, or being kicked out of an organization all together.
