A baby born to a woman with chlamydia may be infected at birth. Children can get perinatal eye infections or pneumonia from chlamydia. The silver nitrate eyedrops used to prevent infection with gonorrhea at birth are not effective against chlamydia.

No one is immune to getting the bacterial infection that causes chlamydia. It is possible to get reinfected during or after treatment. However, some people are more susceptible than others. For instance, a young or pregnant woman has changes in the cells on her cervix that make infection with chlamydia more likely. In addition, some patients will have at least mild short term protection against reinfection after curing chlamydia; however, reinfection within months of treatment is still extremely common.
