You ABSOLUTELY can become a surgeon if you are color blind. I'm a graduating medical student; I personally know several colorblind classmates going into surgery and colorblind practicing surgeons. Colorblindness is very common and will not in anyway prevent you from entering into the medical profession.

∙ 10y agoIt will make it more difficult for you to perform your job. Even though you are working in grays, certian types of color blindness cause problems with differentiating hues as well. This can make it difficult to see pathology like lighter or darker colored tissue and edges of organs. For example you need to see if the walls of the gallbladder are smooth or appear to have bumps, which would represent stones in the wall. This is a very slight difference that a person with color blindness might miss. I know this because I became an ultrasound tech and did not know I was color blind until l had almost finished school, and by then I had enough scanning experience to realize I was not seeing what everyone else in class was able to see. I went to my eye doctor and had my vision tested and found out I was color blind, and the doctor agreed with me that my issues with seeing while I scanned were related to color blindness. I have red-green color blindness, which in everyday circumstances does not present a problem for most people and most never realize they have this type of color blindness, but in an occupation like ultrasound, the deficiency in sight becomes painfully obvious.
