Can you bring in a rifle and trade it for a handgun?
Many gun dealers do take firearms in trade. It is up to the individual dealer. However, you must be able to legally own a handgun to do that.
I don't know what you want to compare the rifle to, to list its disadvantages. Typically, people call most long guns a "rifle," as opposed to a hand gun (although almost all handguns have rifled barrels). In a firefight, advantage is going to be with the person who has a long gun (rifle)--especially a high-powered, semiautomatic rifle.
