You can buy a 7-Day Unlimited Metrocard for $29. It will give you unlimited rides for 7 days, starting from the day you first swipe the card. It will stop working at midnight on the 7th day. Don't start using it at night, because that will count as one day. For example, if you swipe the card for the first time at 11 PM, that will count as Day 1. As soon as the clock strikes midnight, it will be Day 2. So if you are doing a lot of traveling, you will get more for your money if you swipe it for the first time early in the day.
Also keep in mind that once you swipe the card, it won't work again for 5 minutes. So if you are using one card for multiple people, each additional person will have to wait at the turnstile for 5 minutes until the card works again.
