When you say "The one that we have is on its last leg" I am guessing you are talking about a physical music mixer/track recorder. Your best option is to use the Apple product "GarageBand". Of course this assumes you already have an Apple computer. Pro-Tools is the premier audio mixing software but it is costly. Audacity is a free alternative.
