Placing or dropping ANYTHING into the hot springs at Yellowstone is ABSOLUTELY forbidden, and this regulation IS enforced. If done too extensively, doing so WILL do permanent damage to these sensitive features.
The water in these springs are also filled with bacteria, and any food cooked in them would be far too dangerous to eat. You'd pretty much have to re-cook the food to kill the bacteria within them.
On the other hand, the temperature of the water in some hot springs (not all) is hot enough to cook food if doing so were permitted and if you took adequate precautions to keep the spring water from directly contacting the food.
