from Wikipedia-The raw fruit can have a somewhat bitter taste, but becomes tender when cooked and develops a rich, complex flavor. From another site's answer column, it's got a mild toxin in it as do all members of the nightshade family. I don't know about all that, cause there's lots of edible nightshades. We just checked, and the seeds are indeed bitter raw. I would say yes, eat it raw, but cut out the seeds. Nevertheless, we're making some Parmesan with it right now, yum. I think it's best cooked.
