Narcissism as a disorder is characterized according to the diagnostic and statistics manual as having nine characteristics and a person can be diagnosed with narcissism with five of those nine characteristics providing those characteristics provide complications within their life that are negative toward their relationships with other people both at home and at the workplace. A person can be diagnosed with narcissism and still live a relatively benign life, a lot of people have the misunderstanding that if you are narcissistic that you are a criminal and that's just not the case.

The emotional abuse that they employ is learned from childhood and it's pretty typical so typical in fact that often survivors of a narcissistic relationship when they learn about the disorder they feel that narcissist must have some type of a secret school or something because they all do the same thing. It's all just basic manipulation skills that they use but some of them use it more effectively and more disastrously for the victim. One of the typical types of abuse is gaslighting where they intentionally alter your vision of what reality is in order for them to avoid being culpable for their actions. The inadvertently actually can destroy your reality by doing so without actually knowing that they're doing that. They think they're just getting out away with something but meanwhile you're thinking you're crazy because you seen one thing but you believe another thing from what they told you. Gaslighting is basically altering somebody's reality into something that it isn't.

They often are characterized by cowardice when it comes to anything to do with accountability. You can count on them trying to duck it no matter what. They often believe in winning no matter what the cost even if it means cheating just as long as they don't get caught cheating they're okay with it. They are hierarchical and thinking so everybody they see gets rated and if you're rated above them then they will be very polite and courteous to you if you're rated below them you can count on them treating you like trash or nobody's looking around.

This is due to their lack of object constancy and whole object relations. Those are fancy words for basically saying that when they're angry they can't think of anything good about you and when you're being thought in general they cannot see you or themselves in a realistic and integrated hole of all of their flaws and virtues. This is further complicated by their natural lack of empathy, their exploitative nature, their grandiose personality, their belief that they are special and that they are entitled to special treatment, This means that when they don't receive that style of treatment or idealization, they blame you and they often have a somewhat sadistic need to punish. In relationships they have a three cycle relationship typically. They go through a phase of idealization in relationships followed by devaluation and then a cold and brutal discard.

They almost have a switch that gets flipped where when they decide that they're offended or they no longer have a use for you all empathy is gone. They can operate in the coldest calculating manner to ensure that they get the most that they could possibly get from the split up. They typically have an avoidant attachment which means that they will never truly be able to bond with another person because they're defenses won't allow them to get that close to them. So between the lack of empathy and the avoidant attachment they can never actually love anybody. Not in the same way or to the same level that people that are non-narcissistic can.

Narcissism is the false display of love on the self and at the expense of others. Narcissism is self gratifying and manipulative to the detriment of others.
