Yes, USB cables can be extended using CAT5 networking cables. You don't need to cut the wires and combine them yourself though, as there are many cables and hardware solutions available for purchase now.
Yes, you can get a CAT5 extender, but it may need to be powered.
One can buy an HDMI over Cat5 cable on various places across the world wide web. The best place to buy a Cat5 is eBay, the best online store in the world.
USB Extenders are devices that allows to transmit the new USB 2.0 protocol via inexpensive Cat5 or Cat6 UTP cabling. Its the simplest means of extending signal to a remote device. These usb extension devices are plug & play and works efficiently with all major operating systems.
yes it is
USB gets straight onto the bus, Cat5 is buffered. USB is restricted to short physical distances, Cat 5 goes greater distances. For general use you won't notice any difference in speed
It depends on the TYPE of interface, meaning, if it's a USB cable it can only be a MAXIMUM of 5 Meters long. However, USB repeaters can be bought for about $20 that extend that cable 16ft. You can piggyback the repeaters but this is expensive. 36ft cables A-B also exist for about $45. In extreme cases you can also buy a USB over CAT5 adapters that will send that signal up to 350ft! These retail around $80 and your average CAT5 cable is $20-40 for a 100ft to 350ft length. IEEE1284 DB25 to Cenntronics (Old Style) cables come in 100ft lengths however there are 5 standards of communication SPP, ECP, EPP etc... the higher speeds dont like being extended past 25ft but this varies due to cable impedance and controler output. It may be wise to use a USB over CAT5 extender and then a USB to Centronics adapter if this needed to be longer then 50ft. I have been selling these solutions for the past 15years and know I am right. =)
They are not interchangeable in all circumstances. CAT5 is for 10/100 Ethernet and Cat6 can go all the way to 10Gig Ethernet over short distances. The specs are tighter for CAT6 than for CAT5 and the frequencies are higher and more complex.
An individual can purchase VGA over Cat5 Devices at TigerDirect, NextTag, CommSpecial, Amazon, Kijiji, eBay, Cables to Go (C2G), Staples, PCWorldBusiness, Aptolution, and NewEgg.
It really depends on the USB device and the type of cable you use to extend it. The USB specification states that with a passive USB cable you cannot extend a device more than 16 feet. There are active extension cables than can be used to extend devices beyond that distance. Depending on the type of extender you use, you can actually extend the device hundreds of feet away. There are active USB cables with in-line repeaters and there are extenders that will use custom length Cat5e cable for the extension.
USB cable extensions plug into the computer or laptop on the USB port, they only fit one way and it's with the USB symbol facing up or to the side. The other end will plug into the device you are wishing to extend.
USB cables do come in different lengths depending upon the device that is used with it. USB cables range from 3-5 meters, but do not extend beyond 5 meters.
And what, exactly, would you connect them to on your computer? You can get a hub to extend existing USB 2.0 ports, but there are no external buses with enough bandwidth to install a USB 2.0 controller.
